Anonymous asked: alysia, tell us, how do you memorise all your poems? i really love spoken word and can remember other writer's poems almost flawlessly, but i cannot remember my own. what are your tricks? thank you for sharing your gifts - you and all the other strivers. x
the trick is reading your work over and over to yourself which happens through the process of editing. by the time you have successfully edited a poem, you’ve read it aloud to yourself so many times that you already know the majority of it. but if that doesn’t work try reciting what you know in the shower. the best way you can tell if you’ve memorized a piece is if you can mindlessly say the piece while focusing on something else. try reciting while brushing your hair, or sweeping the floor, or watching tv, or jogging.
